Jeff Beck: Truth (1968)
Out of the Yardbirds – where he’d briefly served time with Jimmy Page – Beck corralled singer Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood, drummer Micky Waller and input from Keith Moon, Nicky Hopkins and John Paul Jones. They rejigged the Yardbirds’ Shapes of Things, took on Morning Dew, Old Man River and Greensleeves but notably Willie Dixon’s You Shook Me which early the following year popped up on Led Zeppelin’s debut. When it came to heavy duty rock, Beck and pals got there first but Led Zepp’s Page (who wrote Beck’s Bolero on the album) was eavesdropping. Not the last time Led Zep would borrow or steal.
