David Bowie: Young Americans (1975)

Bowie’s venture into Philly soul may have been fuelled by cocaine but there was no doubt he wanted to capture the spirit of funk and soul, as only a white Englishman could. He cracked great singles with the title track and the chart-topping Fame (with co-writer John Lennon), co-wrote Fascination with the then unknown Luther Vandross and he got on the Black music TV show Soul Train. If he’d just snuck the single Golden Years onto the album it would be perfect, but it’s an underrated album in his vast catalogue.
