Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers: Moanin’ (1958)

With a young band which included trumpeter Lee Morgan (just 20), Bobby Timmons (22) and tenor player Benny Golson (29), the 39- year old drummer Blakey served up a classic Blue Note jazz album which opened with Timmons’ memorable title track and had equally strong tunes like Golson’s Blues March and Along Came Betty. Blakey at the back drove everything and the tune Moanin’ became a Messengers signature piece. You’ll recognise it.
