Mark Knopfler: One Deep River (2024)
Knopfler’s solo career since Dire Straits – as heard on terrific albums like Privateering (2012) and Tracker (2015) – has been worth tuning for: subtle guitar work, in-the-pocket grooves and interesting lyrics. He owes considerable debts to J.J. Cale but albums like this one are no less persuasive for that. Lowkey, stressless, acoustic-framed Americana and downbeat folk-rock by way of Britain’s melancholy North East.
