Louis Armstrong: Louis in London (1968)
When the great jazz innovator and trumpet legend Louis Armstrong arrived in Britain in 1968 – for the final time, he died in 1971 – his recent hit Wonderful Wonderful was already a popular standard. In this session recorded live at the BBC he and his band played that and other hits (Hello Dolly!, Mack the Knife), sentimental favourites (When It’s Sleepy Time Down South ,Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On) and crowd pleasers (When the Saints Go Marching In). Probably easy for them, but they serve them up with enthusiasm and style. And he dedicates You’ll Never Walk Alone to all the American mothers who have sons in Vietnam.
