JJ Grey & Mofro: Country Ghetto (2007)
White country soul here with a powerful voice from the white trash ghetto which aches like a Southern soul singer. There’s a backwoods quality here – real steamy Georgia funk – but it’s offset by the spirit of Memphis soul, the Allman Brothers, James Brown and the blues. Quite a meltdown with Grey delivering impassioned singing as he gets bitter about war, broods about emotional losses and gets down in the swamp for serious funk.
