This could hardly fail given Carpenter’s co-writers were Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Pink etc) and Amy Allen (Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendez etc), Wrap that up in a cover which was either sexist or satirical – either way it became a great talking point on social media – and you have a collection of generic, clever, addictive contemporary pop which referenced disco, R’n’B, country-pop and more (without being any one specifically) and ticked all the boxes for a demographic raised on those artists mentioned.
