Metallica: Master of Puppets (1986)
Previously we’ve recommended the more obvious Metallica albums (And Justice For All, Metallica) but here we go back to their third album and the last with bassist Cliff Burton, killed on the subsequent tour. Even if this kind of metal isn’t exactly your thing you can appreciate the sheer mathematical discipline required, the skin tight playing and firepower that four people can capture in a studio... and Lars Ulrich’s extraordinary playing which set a standard in metal. Hugely acclaimed in metal circles. Essential, if ear-punishing.
Next: Metallica, Metallica; AC/DC, Back in Black; Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath and Paranoid
