Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms (1985)

For decades you couldn’t persuade really hip people to appreciate Dire Straits and this album – with those inescapable singles Money For Nothing and Walk of Life – was maybe to blame. (Still, it doesn’t have Twisting by the Pool on it, so that’s something.) However on a fair hearing there’s a lot of good stuff going on, even four decades on you have to admire Mark Knopfler’s Northern Britain take on Dylan/ JJ Cale songwriting, his mercurial guitar playing and the glistening but warm digital production. And the seven minute title track.
