Alice Coltrane: The Carnegie Hall Concert (1971)

Recorded in 1971, this could be the gateway album into the various facets of jazz pianist/harpist Coltrane’s diverse career. On the night – with Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil McBee, Ed Blackwell and others; two tenor saxophonists, two double bassists and two drummers – she played her own spiritual compositions (Journey to Satchidananda and Shiva-Loka) and also opened up the big ensemble for Africa and Leo by her late husband John. A landmark event and an announcement that Alice was also a Coltrane to be taken very seriously.

Next: Alice Coltrane, A Monastic Trio and Journey to Satchidananda; John Coltrane, Africa/Brass and A Love Supreme
