Herbie Hancock: Empyrean Isles (1964)

With fellow alumni from Miles Davis’ band – bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams and Freddie Hubbard on cornet – the great pianist leads the group through four bop and modal tunes, among them a 14 minute experimental exploration (The Egg) and the cool, unexpected hit Cantaloupe Island. Cornerstone jazz of its period, done in a day.

Next: Herbie Hancock, The New Standard and Maiden Voyage; Miles Davis, In a Silent Way
